Make a list

Making a list of what you have before you go online or request a quotes is the best way to start.  Most moving companies, will require you to provide aproximately how many boxes and a brief list of your main items to give you and estimate or quote.  If you prefer to have an in-house estimate done, most moving companies will provide one for free.  If they charge you for your estimate then you might want to think twice about using their services.  You can download a quick inventory list here  and start your planning today.



Have plenty of supplies

Finding out how many moving boxes you will need for your relocation efforts is one of the most basic parts of the experience. You do not want to purchase too many boxes and be left with extras that you cannot use and you do not want to have bought too few and need to run out and buy more boxes at the last minute.

 

Most of us move under a deadline so preparation is a key aspect of the moving process. Deciding how many moving boxes you need may be a bit confusing if you have not inventoried your home, but there is an easy way to do it online.  Many moving sites offer some type of calculator to estimate  how many boxes your will need.  Use this Grid as your guideline:

Expenses Associated with Moving

 

There are a lot of expenses involved when moving. From the purchase of boxes, moving supplies, accessories, transport, etc. it involves a lot of money. A 3-bedroom home will require 100-120 moving boxes of different sizes. An average box will cost $2-$10 totaling about $250-$300. Tips

  • Before moving, take an inventory of all the household items. Then dependent on the type, size and numbers, buy boxes accordingly.

  • It is good to buy extra moving boxes, so that you do not run out of boxes at the last minute and it will not be a strain on your pocket.

  • If any boxes are left, they can be flattened, folded and stored for future use.

  • Depending on your budget, opt for wholesale moving boxes, cheap moving boxes or reused/recycled moving boxes.

  • A lot of dealers sell moving kits which is a good value for money. They come in various sizes like small, medium and large.


Color coordinate

LONG DISTANCE MOVE CHECKLIST

 

 

  1. Make a moving calendar: No matter how far in advance you start planning your move, you will probably wish you had more time once moving day approaches. Create a calendar listing all of the tasks you need to do to avoid procrastination.

  2. Declutter, declutter, declutter: Long distance moving charges are based mainly on the weight of your items and the distance. Moving is the perfect opportunity to purge your belongings of things you don’t really need. If you haven’t used something in a year, it probably doesn’t need to be taken to your new home, unless it has sentimental value. Organize a garage sale, list unwanted items on eBay or donate them to charity.

  3. Decide on your moving budget and a mode of transport: Research your options for moving all of your stuff–long-distance moving companies, mobile storage moving companies, renting a trailer or RV, or shipping boxes. If hiring a moving company, ask friends for recommendations and check the companies’ credentials and ratings with objective agencies such as Better Business Bureau.

  4. Be flexible: If possible, avoid moving during peak season (May to September), and if you do have to move during the summer months, plan your move far in advance since packers, drivers, trucks and warehouses will be in high demand.

  5. Pack valuables carefully: Take the time to pack valuable items carefully, since a long-distance move can be a bumpy ride. You may want to leave valuables for the movers to pack, since many movers must pack and move the breakables and valuables themselves for insurance to cover their repair or replacement.

  6. Get rid of perishables and hazardous materials: Frozen foods and other perishables and hazardous materials such as paint, flammable items and cleaning products cannot be put on a moving truck. Give hazardous items away or contact your local Environmental Protection Agency for disposable information.

  7. Shipping your car vs. taking a roadtrip: If you have to ship your car, research car shipping companies to find the best rate. Although auto transport can be expensive, take into consideration the cost of fuel if you drive on your own. If driving cross country, be sure to have your car checked for maintenance before the trip–the last thing you’ll need during your move is a breakdown in an unfamiliar area.

  8. Pit stops for pets: If traveling with pets, keep them in their carriers and make frequent rest stops to give them water and check for accidents. Bring plenty of wipes, towels, etc. for quick clean-ups.

  9. Take medical and other personal records with you: If possible, carry copies of important documents with you during your move. Another safe option is to have your bank transfer a safety deposit box to a bank in your new location.

  10. Consider moving insurance: It is highly recommended that you purchase moving insurance to cover any damage to your belongings, especially during a long-distance move.
